Richard was born in Dublin in 1978 into a musical family. In 1985 he began playing the cello and 3 years later received a guitar under the Christmas tree. After many years of playing string quartets, a few classical and electric guitars, Richard was lured toward the lute. He began studying with Nigel North in 1998 and moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Elizabeth Kenny in 2001.

Richard has since performed with many renowned ensembles in the UK including the King’s Consort, the Early Opera Company, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Concert, I Fagiolini, the Gonzaga Band, and Sonnerie. He is also a member of the newly formed lute quartet ‘Chordophony’.

On the continent Richard has played with several groups such as Concerto Palatino and les Talens Lyriques, he plays regularly in Ireland with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and has performed throughout the country as a soloist where he has been described as ‘no mean master of his instrument’ (the Irish Times). Richard is featured on over a dozen recordings.

Richard now lives in Sweden with his wife Hannah.
